Most people struggle to choose their career goals, and know how to develop a career plan for the future. It's one of the most challenging & stressful things to get right. Instead of trusting friends and family, we've created some simple career planning tools - designed by a world-leading Careers Strategist, and tested over 10 years. So you can trust the process, and focus on putting into action your individual, personalised development plan.
Our methodology was built from working with '000s of career changers at all levels, which means you have a validated toolbox to create a vision & needs statement that will match you to the right work, for you. Sort from our 8 work preferences & build a needs hierarchy - so you can make future decisions with clarity.

Using the data you provide us, our AI recommendations engine will accurately predict & match you to one of the 12 most common Career Pathways - revealing what you are most suited to. This makes choosing the right individual development plan for you - data driven vs guesswork.
We learn all about your skills, strengths & experience - and match you to the ‘jobs or projects’ that are the best fit for you - now, and in the future. And by revealing the 'skill or experience gaps' you have for those future roles, you can also access the learning resources to acquire these, so the transition becomes achievable.

Applying for a role before you’re ready, can be dis-heartening and set you back. We prepare you for an internal promotion - or for a recruiter conversation - by helping you identify the right role - and be ready - by having learned the skill & experiences you’ll need, to succeed. Before you apply.

There are normally two types of career goals - long term, and short term.
Long term career goals are about setting a vision for what you want your career to look like in ~10 years. So start by thinking about:
- How will your work be contributing to your life?
- What will you have learned and achieved?
- What impact will you have had from working?
Once you know the anwer to questions like this you can set long-term career goals - which gives you something to work toward.
Short term career goals, are the implementation engine. They are the action steps you take in the immediate ~1-3 years, to enable your vision and long-term goals to be achieved.
So for example if your long term career goals are to be working part-time & remotely, having achieved leadership status in your field, and having the time to work for a NFP - you would want some of your short term goals to focus on building leadership skills & experience, having cross-industry experience, and having worked in different cultures.
There are many career planning processes in the marketplace. It's a matter of finding one that works for you.
Some of the common principles most career planning processes follow are
1) Self-Discovery. Know yourself well and understand both your skills, needs & goals first.
2) Generate options through research. Understand the market and what working pathways and jobs suited to you are available - where is the growth in your sector?
3) Decide on a Pathway - know what direction you are going in and start preparing for transtion
4) Learning - develop a self-directed learning plan to upskill, reskill, and gain new professional & soft skills you will need to migrate into the new role.
5) Experimentation - choose some personal learning activities that help you explore if the role is right for you before resigning or accepting a new posiition.
An individual development plan might comprise of a career planning process (see above) but could also mean you wnat to develop 'life skills' or 'prepare resources' or 'build a network' or work on 'self-limiting beliefs' that are holding you back in both life and work.
So think about an individual or personal development plan as working on your mental health and physical wellbeing, versus a career plan as your workplan for how to grow new skills, get paid more, and progress into more productive purposeful work for yourself.
They are both important, and platforms like Actvo help you to develop both simultaneosly in the one application.
Taking a Career Path Quiz can be helpful to get a high level understanding of some options for you.
But without going through a full career planning process, starting with self-discovery - you may get a pretty generic answer from career quizes.
