Frequently Asked Questions

What are good career goal examples I can use for my development plan?

There are normally two types of career goals - long term, and short term.

Long term career goals are about setting a vision for what you want your career to look like in ~10 years. So start by thinking about:

-  How will your work be contributing to your life?
- What will you have learned and achieved?
- What impact will you have had from working?

Once you know the anwer to questions like this you can set long-term career goals - which gives you something to work toward.

Short term career goals, are the implementation engine.  They are the action steps you take in the immediate ~1-3 years, to enable your vision and long-term goals to be achieved.

So for example if your long term career goals are to be working part-time & remotely, having achieved leadership status in your field, and having the time to work for a NFP - you would want some of your short term goals to focus on building leadership skills & experience, having cross-industry experience, and having worked in different cultures.

What is an ideal "career planning process" or model I could follow?

There are many career planning processes in the marketplace.  It's a matter of finding one that works for you.

Some of the common principles most career planning processes follow are

1) Self-Discovery.  Know yourself well and understand both your skills, needs  & goals first.

2) Generate options through research.  Understand the market and what working pathways and jobs suited to you are available  - where is the growth in your sector?

3) Decide on a Pathway - know what direction you are going in and start preparing for transtion

4) Learning - develop a self-directed learning plan to upskill, reskill, and gain new professional & soft skills you will need to migrate into the new role.

5) Experimentation - choose some personal learning activities that help you explore if the role is right for you before resigning or accepting a new posiition.

What is an "individual development plan" and how do I develop one?

An individual development plan might comprise of a career planning process (see above) but could also mean you wnat to develop 'life skills' or 'prepare resources' or 'build a network' or work on 'self-limiting beliefs' that are holding you back in both life and work.

So think about an individual or personal development plan as working on your mental health and physical wellbeing, versus a career plan as your workplan for how to grow new skills, get paid more, and progress into more productive purposeful work for yourself.

They are both important, and platforms like Actvo help you to develop both simultaneosly in the one application.

Is a career path quiz worth taking?
