Put simply, Transferable Skills are those that apply to many jobs. So for example, if you are good at Facilitation, or Digital Marekting you can do this in many jobs. As opposed to Technical Skills - like Radiography, which are specific to certain roles.
These skills allow you to make small - and large changes to your career plan. Once you have identified your transferable skills you can create a career change plan or career mobility plan that will be more realistic, as you know you have the base skills needed for the job. Plus - if you know what the most common transferable skills are - you can determine if you have enough to make moving careers or jobs, less risky.
To figure out "what are my transferable skills" there are 3 ways:
1. Use Actvo - we will help guide you through your three different types of skills, and help identify the ones that are most transferable in your industry. Providing you with a reference point to maintain and keep updated so you are always ready to transition.
2. Do it yourself - simply go through all the jobs you've done, identify the skills you've learned in each job and put them into at least two categories - 'soft-skills' eg your people skills - 'how' you do things like Highly Organised. The other are your 'technical or professional skills'. Now consider the industry you are moving into -and identify through your own research or knowlege, what are the critical skills for someone in that industry, at your level. Those are your tranferable skills. One way to figure this out is by looking at a job application that you want - and noticing what they state as 'required skills' - do you have these? If so, you could transfer them, into that job.
3. Ask a GPT - give it your list of jobs and ask what the most transferable skills are that you have learned. NB: depending on what GPT you are using, the skills referencing might be out of date, and they may not have detailed knowleege on your sector.
Understanding everything you are good at is like putting together a puzzle, without a picture. What you need is a reliable process to get things into the right place.
Career Assessment Tools like Actvo are built on a methodology that is proven over time, and from working with 1000s of different types of executives, and people at all levels. We have codified into the Actvo system the critical things that we know people need to know about themselves, in order to perform well and progress in their career.
But unravelling the pieces is hard. So we provide you with a guided and interactive process to learn the critical things you will need to know about yourself. They include Personality Test, Values Sorting Activity, your Personal Strengths (or soft-skills), your Profressional / Learned Skills & Experiences, your Technical Skills, and the Work Experience that most suits your professional needs.
This data helps you - and our recommendations engine - narrow in on things that are most likely to work for you in your future, as its based on current, self-authored data provided by you.
So if you want to develop a career plan or an employee development plan for yourself or others -make sure you first know your own skills and strengths and needs well - or otherwise you are relying on guesswork.
It's likely that your organisation will encourage you to do one at least annually.
You will know when is the right time to develop a plan, as you will be ready for change - but probably not be sure what is the right next step or job for you. So doing a Career Planning Assessment or developing your own Self Assessment Plan will be very valuable. Doing the work will most critically help you to know if you are ready to move into a new role, by firstly understanding what skills or experience you might need to transiton.
We recommend keeping your career 'story' up to date at all times, so you know what you are strong at, you know what your current capability and transferable skills are, and you know how to communicate your value to a new employer, team manager, or recruiter at short notice.
Career Fit - means different things to different people. But if you want an easy definition - it means that you are doing the work that is both 'right for your skills' and the work that 'is right for you'.
This means work that you can do - but also challenges you and meets some kind of personal purpose such as learning, or impact, or growth, or asset accumultion. The key to knowing if you have Career Fit is:
- Can you do the job easily?
- And does it challenge you?
- Are you achieving a greater purpose than just making money?
- Is it making you happy?
Our Story helps you understand yourself better and we can match you to jobs that we believe are the best 'carerer fit' for you - which could just be the job you are in now !
Thats validation.
